why wont my air compressor re-start?

Matt K asked:

i have a craftsman 3 horsepower, 12 gallon oilless compressor. it builds pressure and then turns off automatically where is leaks air from a small valve that looks like a bike or automobile tire valve. i replaced this valve and it still leaks. anyway, after building pressure it turns off and after losing air it tries to kick back on but it cant. almost as if the piston is siezed. but it is not. i have to unplug it to avoid problems bc it dims the crap out of the power in the garage and i dont want to burn out the motor

    You need a new one.

Usually there is a purge valve which drops the pressure inside the cylinder for an easy restart. It is an electrically operated solenoid valve. The coil might be busted. If not, check for the burned out rubber o-rings on the purge system (usually on the cylinder head)
