Air compressor chugs out?

dragonfairy1999 asked:

I was give a small Campbell Hausfeld 8 gallon air compressor. It usually starts fine, but some times after filling up to 125 psi and allowed to sit, if you use it, and it tries to kick on, it chugs, only coming up to about 1/3 normal speed, then shuts off. If I bleed the pressure down to about 50 psi, SOME times it will kick back on and run normally. Sometimes it wont do anything but chug chug chug die. I’ve changed the oil, drained the tank, air filter looks good. The only thing I can think is over heating? But doesn’t seem to be. I’m lost at what to try next.

    your unloader valve is sticking.

Ae you running off of an extension cord? That’s the worst thing you can do for a compressor. Plug it into the wall directly, and buy some extra air hose. Hope this helps.

check the pressure switch it may be bad and like the other person said the unload er valve is sticking, add some 5 or 10 wt oil
[3 in 1 is fine] to the air intake it might free it up

DO NOT put any oil into your compressor if it is an air cooled unit. and never use an extension cord. your unloader valve is located in the pressure switch box and they do fail causing this type of problem. they are easy to replace. you will know if it is working if you here air release for a second or two when the compressor shuts off. if not then replace it.
