air filter for compressor: intake or outlet?

asked:

I want to put a filter on my shop air compressor. Do the ones they commonly sell at the hardware store go on the intake or exhaust of the compressor? Do they filter out any moisture, or just particles?

The filter wil remove dust and airborne particles but you’ll need a moiture separator to remove moisture from the compressed air. It installs on the high pressure side of the compressor.
