automotive starting tools?
Grant Y asked:
I am going to start doing an apprenticeship for automotive tech work, like a standard mechanic does and i need to know what some good starter tools would be because i need to know because i can’t just walk in there with no tools or at least crappy ones. So far I have: Rotary tools, an electric drill, some wrenches and sockets, punches and chissle’s, ratchets, a small air compressor and a small crappy tool box with 3 small drawers and the top storage place, and a screw driver set, oh and alot of allan keys. Specific answers are very appreciated. thank you.

CHECK OUT CRAFTSMAN TOOLS ONLINE TO GET A BETTER IDEA OF STARTER SETS
if you ask where you are taking the class they should provide you with a basic needs list
first of all i wish you all the best of luck in your enedeor. your pretty good shape , make sure you have a standard and meter sockets and wrench sets. get some torx sockets and drivers, a set of nut drivers both std and metric, start from there and add what you need as you go along. i have spent thousands of dollars on snap on and all popular make of tools. but craftsman is the best you can get and they will warranty them in any store no questions . keep your head up and there will be lots of days when you will say why did i choose this job for a living. i done it 46 years and dont regret a thing about it.
That’s a toughie. I would say to include metric wrenches, sockets, torx bits and screwdrivers size T-2 all the way thru T-60, the wrenches should be sizes 2mm all the way thru 36mm, some crow foot wrenches in metric and U.S. measures, a magnetic pick -up tool, assorted flashlights (L.E.D. bulb styles) a mirror on a stick, A clutch fan wrench and the tool that holds the pulley,. This is all I can think of right now as I was a bodyman for 42 years and had to buy many of the same tools as you do, because in bodywork I was also a mechanic. when you get to your new job, I am positive you will find out what else you may need…Good Luck in your new career….
A decent set combination wrenches. A full set of screw drivers. Make sure to have some stubbies. A good set of ratchets with six and 12 point sockets in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive, both deep and standard and extensions. A decent set of pliers. Combination, slip, channel, locking etc. Air ratchet, impact gun and appropriate sockets(deep and standard), die grinder, both straight and 90 degree. An air drill is nice. Pry bars. Drill bits. Torque wrench is a nice addition and speed handle. Hammer and punches. These will give you a good start.
