The bigger the better. For a home garage, get at least 5 gallons capacity. This can inflate tires and run air tools but not constantly.
If you dont plan on doing anything major then I would reccomend something small that isnt going to take up a lot of space. If you were thinking about running some tools then you might want to get a medium sized 15 or 20 stand up compressor. I shopped around for one and found the DeWalt 15 gallon to be about the best midsized one. As for a smaller compressor or if it’s just really for tires or light use, I dont think it’s necessary to spend a lot of money. I believe all tanks have to meet specifications and be inspected so that really isn’t the issue. The difference will be the motor. I have a neighbor with a little 1 gallon shop force compressor and it is great for filling up the tires and such, it doesnt fill very fast but if you have a flat youre not going to get there on time anyhow. Seriously, if it’s not for anything major you should be fine with whatever they may sell at Harbor Frieght.
you most likely will have to get a 120 volt model. buy the largest one you can afford. you wont be sorry. all air tools have a “cfm” rating and thats how much air it needs to run full time. also and air cooled unit wont last as long as an oil cooled unit. oil cooled do cost more but are worth it for long years of service.
and go to sears and look at the ratings on each one. most will tell you what type of air tools they are designed to operate. you need to know what tools you are going to use and how often. then decide if you want to pay for a compressor that you may only need once a month or less. if you plan on doing repairs for your friends and then getting bigger, make the investment for a real good unit, if not then just buy the one that will do the job.
